Memorial services held for 3-year-old girl shot, killed in Southeast DC

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Hundreds of family members and friends gathered for a memorial service Tuesday for a 3-year-old girl shot and killed in Southeast D.C. earlier this month.

Ty’ah Settles was caught in the crossfire while riding in a car on Hartford Street back in May 3.

Viewing and memorial services were held at the Temple of Praise in Southeast Tuesday morning.

Many of the family members and friends in attendance wore t-shirts with her face and her favorite character, Minnie Mouse, printed across the front.

After the service, family and friends made their way to Hartford Street, where a memorial made of balloons, stuffed animals, flowers and photos of her sits along the same stretch of road where she was struck and killed by gunfire.

Loved ones surrounded Ty’ah’s tiny casket, tugged by a horse and carriage, as doves were released in her memory.

It was an emotional sendoff for Settles’ closest loved ones.

After the dove release sendoff, her casket was taken to a local cemetery to be interred.

Her godfather, Bernard Brown, described in the days after her death as, “a sweet young child,” “a three-year-old with the smarts of a seven-year-old,” and “an innocent child who never saw it coming.”

Now nearly three weeks after Settles was shot, the search is still on for her killer.

DC Police, the FBI, and the ATF are all working the case. There’s a $50,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
