Memorial Day weekend will see extra cops on roads to crack down on drunk drivers: NYPD
NEW YORK (PIX11) — New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez joined NYPD Transportation Chief Philip P. Rivera, agency leaders, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to announce the annual initiative to crack down on speeding and drunk driving during Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer.
During the news conference, Chief Rivera expressed his own cousin was killed in a DWI incident.

“My cousin was 19 years old when he was killed. The driver was drunk,” Chief Rivera said.
During the holiday weekend, the NYPD will be looking for drivers intoxicated behind the wheel. Checkpoints and other resources will be used to enforce the law.
Police will also go after drivers who are speeding and driving recklessly.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 37 people die every day in DWI incidents.
Melissa Feliciano-Wylie’s brother was killed in 1995; since then, she has been advocating for victims and safety.
DOT is also asking for the passage of state legislation to renew and extend the city’s red light camera program; the law authorizing the use of these cameras expires later this year.
