Memorial Day procession, ceremonies set to honor fallen soldiers. Here are your can't-miss events in Oshkosh.

OSHKOSH – Ceremonies and a procession will be held in Oshkosh to honor those who lost their lives while in service to our country on Memorial Day.

A few days later, a golf tournament will be held to benefit the Military Veterans Museum & Education Center.

Other events this week include Oshkosh Into the Night, the Youth Choir will hold a concert and the Menominee Zoo will open for the season.

1. Procession, ceremonies to honor fallen soldiers

Oshkosh will honor those who sacrificed their lives in service to our country on Memorial Day, May 27.

A “Reading of the Names,” coordinated by Disabled American Veterans Post 17, will begin at 7 a.m. at the South Park Memorial. The AMVETS Post 7 Auxiliary will hold a ceremony at 8 a.m. along the Fox River near the Oshkosh Convention Center.

Veteran organizations, Scouting units, military vehicles and law enforcement will then gather for the procession, which begins at 9 a.m. at Jackson Street and proceeds down Algoma Boulevard, ending at Riverside Cemetery. The featured speaker for the primary service at the cemetery is Chris Kolakowski, director of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum in Madison.

Also on May 27, Sons of the American Legion / Squadron 70 - Oshkosh will host a brat fry. Food will be served 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1332 Spruce St. Proceeds will go toward bringing the Traveling Vietnam Wall to Oshkosh in October.

2. Oshkosh into the Night features food, art, music

Oshkosh Into the Night will be held 5 to 9 p.m. May 23 at the Opera House Square, 315 N. Main St.

In addition to art and craft vendors, there will be food vendors, as well as dancers, painters and more. Copper Box will play during the event.

3. Menominee Park Zoo to open for season May 25

Menominee Park Zoo, 520 Pratt Trail, Opening Day is scheduled for May 25. The zoo is open daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sept. 29.

The zoo covers about 8 acres and hosts 30 to 50 animals during the season. It offers entertainment and education to more than 100,000 visitors each year.

As the zoo continues to grow, some permanent exhibits are planned. The new exhibits will house native species that will reside at the zoo all year. The permanent exhibits already completed are the wolf, elk, otter and eagle exhibits.

Admission continues to be free, thanks to a gift from Tom and Penny Harenburg.

4. Youth Choir featured at The Howard dinner

Oshkosh Youth Choir will present “Opus 30:20 The Big Show” May 28 at The Howard, 405 Washington Ave.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 6:30 p.m.

A three-course meal will be served, featuring appetizers from New York, main course from England and desserts from France.

The concert features music that has been derived from 37 chart-topping hits from popular music and Broadway.

5. May 29 golf tournament to benefit Military Veterans Museum

Military Veterans Museum & Education Center’s eighth annual Golf Tournament will be May 29 at Lake Breeze Golf Club, 6333 Ball Prairie Road, Winneconne.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start/scramble at 10 a.m.

Cost is $90 per golfer and includes the green fees, cart, meals and two drinks. There will be a box lunch and dinner, hole events and prizes, raffles, and a silent auction.
