Memorial Day is May 27. Here are services, events planned in Hornell area communities.

The nation will pause Monday to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.

Memorial Day honors all military members who died serving in the U.S. armed forces. The holiday always falls on the last Monday of May.

Americans will gather in parks, at cemeteries, along parade routes and beside war monuments to pay tribute to the fallen.

The National Weather Service early forecast for the holiday is wet and mild, with a chance of showers and a high near 74.

Here is a roundup of a Memorial Day services and events in the Hornell and Wellsville area on Monday, May 27.

Hornell

The Hornell American Legion Post 440 sponsors Memorial Day events in the Maple City.

Line-up for the parade at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home. The parade steps off on Bank Street at 9:30 a.m. Ceremonies at the Broadway Mall Veterans Memorial will take place following the parade.

After the ceremonies, the Legion invites community members to stop by the post home at 72 Seneca St. for light refreshments.

Wellsville

Wellsville Morrison Hayes American Legion Post 702 oversees remembrances starting with services at 9:30 a.m. in Veterans Park. The community is encouraged to attend.

Lineup for the Memorial Day parade will be at 9:30 a.m. on Pearl Street near the U.S. Post Office. The parade begins at 10 a.m.

Andover

Andover American Legion Lynch/Burgett Post 397 honor guard will lead a service at 10 a.m. Monday at the North Main Street bridge. The procession will then go to Hillside Cemetery for services.

Arkport

Arkport American Legion Post 1248 parade is at 11 a.m. Monday. Anyone wishing to participate should report to the school for lineup by 10:30.

Following the parade, Gold Star Mother Kim Smith and the American Legion commander will deliver remarks at Arkport Cemetery.

Arkport-Canaseraga Youth Softball chicken barbecue pick-up noon to 3 p.m. at the Legion. Tickets, priced at $13, are available from softball players and at the American Legion, 1 Carter St. Pre-sale only for the chicken barbecue.

Bath

Bath National Cemetery will host Memorial Day ceremonies from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Dansville

American Legion Post 87 conducts services beginning at 8 a.m. at Greenmount Cemetery, followed by observances at Holy Cross Cemetery and the Civil War Memorial on Ossian Street.

The parade will step off at 10 a.m. from in front of the Legion at 34 Elizabeth St. The parade will proceed to Williams Park, 61 Clara Barton St., for services at 11 a.m. in the park.

Wayland

Wayland Legion Post 402 Honor Guard will hold ceremonies at the following places and times on Monday:

  • East Wayland Cemetery, 7:30 a.m.

  • North Loon Lake Cemetery, 7:45 a.m.

  • Lakeside Cemetery, 8 a.m.

  • Old Catholic Cemetery, 8:45 a.m.

  • New Catholic Cemetery, 8:55 a.m.

  • St. Peter’s Cemetery, 9:50 a.m.

  • Perkinsville Parade, 10 a.m.

  • Sacred Heart Cemetery, after the parade.

  • Wayland Memorial Day parade, 11 a.m.

  • Wayland Cemetery, after the parade.

All veterans are invited to attend the cemetery services and march with the American Legion in both parades. Any group or float is welcome to participate in the Wayland Memorial Day parade.

There will be a chicken barbecue at the post home, 102 N. Main St., starting at noon. Chicken barbecues are priced at $12. The “Patrice and Friends” band will perform at around 1.

Scio

Scio's annual Memorial Day parade down Main Street will begin at 10 a.m. The town typically honors a Veteran of the Year and Citizens of the Year during the event.
