Memorial Day marks start of ‘100 Deadliest Days’

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Summer is typically a joyous time, with less work and school and more relaxation, but it can also be a dangerous time for teen drivers.

‘100 Deadliest Days’ is the timeframe between Memorial Day and Labor Day when we see a spike in the number of deadly crashes involving teen drivers.

“Six out of ten crashes involving a teen driver involve a distraction,” said Don Redman, spokesperson with AAA.

Redman says those distractions could be cell phones, other underage passengers and illegal street racing.

“The number one distraction for teen drivers are teen passengers, particularly so for males. Males usually want to show off,” said Redman.

Redman says parents are the first example.

“If we’re speeding, all of those bad behaviors, they don’t occur in a vacuum. Somebody is watching you and it’s usually your teen driver,” said Redman.

Safety officials encourage parents to teach their kids about the consequences of distracted driving.

“It is important for parents to draw a line and expect better behavior from their children, even though the parents are not there. They’ve got to be able to trust them,” said Redman.

AAA says six out of 10 underage fatal car crashes involve a teen not wearing a seat belt.

Of them all, the deadliest day on the road is the July 4.
