Memorial Day events planned for Douglas County

May 24—Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post 499

Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post 499 will present military honors Monday, May 27 at 8:30 a.m. at Wascott Cemetery; 9 a.m. at Gordon Cemetery; 10 a.m. at Bennett Lutheran Cemetery; 10:15 a.m. at the Bennett Cemetery; 10:45 a.m. at Solon Springs Evergreen Cemetery; and 11 a.m. at Solon Springs Catholic Cemetery.

Bong-Hofstedt American Legion Post 409

The Bong-Hofstedt American Legion Post 409 will travel to eight cemeteries in Douglas County for Memorial Day, rain or shine. Their schedule is as follows: 9 a.m. Lakeside Cemetery; 9:30 a.m. Maple Cemetery; 10 a.m. Blueberry Cemetery; 10:30 a.m. Brule Cemetery; 11 a.m. Highland Cemetery; 11:30 a.m. Lake Nebagamon Cemetery; noon, Hawthorne Cemetery; 12:30 p.m. Poplar Cemetery.

Due to the schedule and the distances between cemeteries, the post members will arrive, conduct the ceremony and depart immediately thereafter.

Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435

The Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435 will host the Memorial Day Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery (Veterans' Circle), 8402 Tower Ave. May 27. The main presentation will be by American Legion Post 435, TREA Chapter 119 Honor Guard, and Royal Canadian Legion Slovak Legion and Port Arthur Legion. American Legion Post 435 Commander Butch Liebaert will be the emcee. There will be a presentation of wreaths by local organizations and a Memorial Day address by Fr. Andrew Ricci. The public is invited. Golf carts will be available for those with limited mobility. A handicapped-accessible portable restroom will also be available.

Gordon-Wascott Historical Society

The Gordon-Wascott Historical Society will sponsor a number of free events during Memorial Day Weekend. Enjoy a historical walking tour of downtown Gordon with historian Brian Finstad at 10 a.m. May 25. Participants should meet at the Soo Line Depot in Gordon. An open house will take place at the Historic Meffert House, located across the Finstad Bridge at 14298 S. Finstad Drive from 10 a.m. to noon May 26. The event is hosted by Elyse and Heath Jensen. Visitors can see the progress they've made renovating one of Gordon's oldest historic homes and learn about its history. A historical cemetery walking tour with Doug MacDonald will take place immediately following the 9 a.m. Memorial Day services at the Gordon Cemetery. Participants should meet at the storage building in the back of the cemetery. The Whalen House Museum and Soo Line Depot will also be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday through Monday.
