Melania Trump visits children, gets briefed on opioid crisis at Ohio hospital

First lady Melania Trump kept with tradition on Monday when she stopped by a children's hospital during a trip with President Trump to Cincinnati, Ohio.

Accompanied by White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, Melania visited the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center where she passed out Valentine's Day cards and was briefed on the opioid crisis.

Melania was photographed during a briefing directly pertaining to neonatal opioid crisis issues.

According to CNN reporter Kate Bennett, Melania was at one point greeted by a young girl who gestured for the first lady to hold her, which the Slovenian native then did for a few minutes.

In her first year in the White House, the first lady has made a concerted public effort to fit in time with children at events both foreign and domestic. From reading with children at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll to visiting with students at multiple schools, Melania Trump appears set on addressing the needs of children from varying backgrounds. Even while abroad during her lengthy foreign trip with President Trump, she stopped by both Queen Fabiola University Hospital in Brussels and Bambino Gesu in Rome where she snapped photos and visited with sick children.

The former model raised eyebrows last week when she broke tradition and drove across the National Mall to the State of the Union without her husband. That action came after reports that she was blindsided by news surrounding the commander in chief's alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels.

Melania has often been present with President Trump on trips both foreign and domestic, but she has maintained a minimal public profile where policy areas are concerned during her family's first year in the White House.
