The office of Melania Trump blasted "the liberal media" on Monday in responding to a report claiming the first lady had no interest in taking on her White House role.

A new feature in Vanity Fair includes a quote from a source described as a "longtime friend of the Trumps" who says the first lady had no desire to be America's first lady.

"This isn’t something she wanted and it isn’t something he ever thought he’d win," the source reportedly told Vanity Fair's Sarah Ellison. "She didn’t want this come hell or high water. I don’t think she thought it was going to happen."

The quote quickly spread like wildfire, leading many to turn to the first lady's office for a response. According to CNN's Kate Bennett, a spokeswoman for the former Slovenian model has provided just that.

"Once again part of the liberal media, this time Vanity Fair, has written a story riddled with unnamed sources and false assertions," the response from Melania Trump's spokeswoman reads. "As a magazine tailored to women it is shameful that they continue to write salacious and false stories meant to demean Mrs. Trump, rather than focus on her positive work as First Lady and a supportive wife and mother. As has been stated on the record many times before, she is honored by her role."

The first lady has had a busy fall season, with domestic trips to hurricane-battered Puerto Rico, Texas and Florida and a lengthy foreign trip to Asia. Just last week she appeared with President Trump and son, Barron, as they took part in the pardoning of the Thanksgiving turkey.
