Meeting next month to discuss Route 3 bridge replacement project in Duxbury

DUXBURY – Updates on a proposed project to replace the Route 3 bridge over Franklin Street in Duxbury will be given at a virtual public hearing next month.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, engineers and officials with the state Department of Transportation will give details on the project, which includes construction of a new northbound bridge in the existing median and reconstruction of the existing southbound bridge in its current location.

The Route 3 bridge over Franklin Street in Duxbury is on a list of bridges to be replaced.

The existing northbound bridge will be demolished and the feeder roads removed. The new bridge spans are proposed to have roughly 72-foot single spans and provide a minimum of 16½ feet of vertical clearance over Franklin Street. The proposed paved roads would be 56 feet wide each, with 12-foot travel lanes, an 18-foot inside shoulder and a 14-foot outside shoulder.

The increased vertical clearances require the approaches to the bridges be rebuilt, and the pavement on Franklin Street will be reconstructed including new curbing and sidewalks.

The bridge replacement was one of several on the South Shore highlighted in a $3 billion infrastructure spending plan put forward by Gov. Charlie Baker earlier this year. The Duxbury project is expected to cost roughly $24.4 million.

The plan includes two Braintree bridges, the northbound and southbound Route 3 bridges over the North River near the Norwell-Pembroke line, the Route 24 bridges northbound and southbound over Canton Street in Randolph, and, in Canton, a $1.9 million bridge replacement on Revere Court over the Neponset River.
