Meet The Staff: IndyStar public safety reporter Sarah Nelson

It takes a dedicated staff of journalists to bring you the news from around Central Indiana. In this new feature, the Indianapolis Star is introducing readers to our journalists — or, rather, letting our journalists introduce themselves. First up is Sarah Nelson.

What's your job title?

Public safety reporter

When did you join IndyStar?

January 2021

What's your favorite part of your job?

My job being what it is, I often encounter people when they’re going through the most horrific time of their lives. So, every time someone agrees to share their story with me, I’m deeply moved.

Why journalism?

As cliche as it sounds, I like going to bed every night knowing I may have helped someone. Even to a small extent.

What's your favorite Indy area restaurant or hidden gem?

Savor in Carmel. I think I could eat their cioppino every day for the rest of my life.

What are you reading or streaming?

Reading: "Invisible Child" by Andrea Elliott

Streaming: "30 Rock" for the third time

What’s your favorite quote?

“If the apocalypse comes, beep me.” — Buffy Summers

What's your bucket-list vacation destination?

Vietnam. Between the food, the scenery, the people, I’m itching to go.

Do you prefer dogs or cats?

Cats. Dogs are too needy. But I’ve never owned a pet.

What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?

I don’t like fruit. I force myself to eat it because it’s healthy and all, but I shudder over the texture.

What’s your favorite sport and team?

My favorite sport is volleyball because I used to play. But my favorite pro team to follow is the Brewers. After being forced to watch the Minnesota Twins under the eyesore that was the Metrodome growing up, I cherished my family’s annual trip to Milwaukee to watch the Brew Crew.
