Meet Haleigh Kochanski, The Register-Guard's new breaking news and public safety reporter
Haleigh Kochanski has started covering breaking news and public safety for The Register-Guard.
Kochanski is a graduate of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University and spent a year covering breaking news for The Arizona Republic.
She will continue covering breaking news — everything from road closures and traffic crashes to serious crimes and protests — but also report on policing and criminal justice through a governmental accountability lens. We've specifically asked Kochanski to report on the evolution of police tactics and spotlight social issues that affect the various people and neighborhoods in the community.
She started reporting remotely earlier this month and is moving to Eugene in October.
"I grew up visiting the Pacific Northwest as a child and could always see myself living here as an adult," she said. "I look forward to connecting and familiarizing myself with the Eugene-Springfield community."
In her first couple of weeks, Kochanski has been reaching out to potential sources via video and phone calls. Once here, she will continue reaching out to meet with public officials and community advocates relative to her beat.
Kochanski welcomes introductions, feedback and information about any public safety issues we have yet to report.
