Medford warming shelter activated for Monday

Dec. 13—With freezing temperatures in the forecast, the city of Medford has declared a severe weather event that clears the way for an emergency warming shelter on city-owned property run by a local nonprofit.

A warming shelter operated by Access will be open from 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, through 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Navigation Center, 685 Market St. in Medford.

During severe weather events, the city partners with local nonprofits and community service providers staffed and equipped to operate an emergency shelter. The Monday night shelter will be run by Access.

Anyone interested in volunteering or donating resources to help the shelter is asked to email Matt Rogers at Access at mrogers@accesshelps.org or medfordemergencyshelter@gmail.com.

The city now has a text notification system so homeless locals can be immediately alerted when a severe weather shelter has opened. To be notified by text, send "MED4SHELTERS" TO 888777.

For more information on becoming an approved severe weather or temporary shelter facility, call Deputy Fire Marshal Tanner Farrington at 541-774-2300.
