Meck detention center illness report was gastrointestinal outbreak: Sheriff

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The illness alert reported last week at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center was due to a gastrointestinal outbreak, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office confirmed with Queen City News on Wednesday.

“All affected residents have been responding well to treatment and most were feeling better within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms,” the sheriff’s office said.

The illness was initially reported on Saturday, March 23, and the Sheriff’s Officer alerted the public the next day.

The detention center’s operations continued as normal with a “heightened level of awareness” of those feeling unwell. Fifty inmates were affected.

“The well-being of our residents is a top priority,” said Sheriff Garry McFadden. “We are taking this situation seriously and are taking steps to ensure the health and safety of everyone. I will continue to monitor the situation closely and will adjust procedures as needed.”
