Meat and veggies with white growth & more. Upstate restaurants with worst March inspections

South Carolina health inspectors found multiple violations at restaurants in the Upstate in March, from meats and vegetables covered in white growth to employees not washing their hands when handling food. The state each month releases grades and inspection reports for food establishments across Upstate counties.

Here are the restaurants that received some of the lowest ratings in March.

Crazy Tacos at 1540 S. Murray Ave. in Greenville

Crazy Tacos had an inspection on March 22 and got a C grade.

The restaurant was voluntarily closed because it had no running water available.

While there, an inspector observed various meats, vegetables, refried beans, sauces and butter with visible white growth and other substances on them. Also observed was food stored on the floor.

Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Shelving, prep tables, cooler handles, utensils and equipment were seen with an accumulation of grime and buildup.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on April 1 and got an A grade.

Orient on Main at 4 S Main St. in Greenville

Orient on Main had an inspection on March 13 and got a C grade.

An inspector did not observe employees washing their hands during the entire inspection.

An accumulation of a red substance was seen in the ice bin. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. An accumulation of grease, grime and food debris was seen on equipment surfaces, cook line shelving and walls. A whole was seen in the ceiling above the dish machine.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on March 22 and got an A grade.

Warehouse at Midtown at 1418 Laurens Road in Greenville

Warehouse at Midtown had an inspection on March 13 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed that employees failed to wash their hands as required when changing tasks.

Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Certain foods were seen kept after their expiration dates. Packaged fish was seen not thawed properly. Equipment, shelving inside the walk in cooler and other surfaces were seen as unclean.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on March 20 and got an A grade.

Chad’s Kitchen at 117 S Greenwood Ave. in Greenwood

Chad’s Kitchen had an inspection on March 25 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed an employee handling ready to eat foods without wearing gloves. Also observed an employee failing to wash hands before entering the kitchen after a break.

An accumulation of black buildup was seen inside the ice machine. Various raw proteins were seen thawing at room temperature. The inside of the microwave and sides of equipment had an accumulation of food debris and grease buildup.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on March 29 and got an A grade.

Hodges One Stop at 4528 Main St. in Greenwood

Hodges One Stop had an inspection on March 1 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed the meat slicer, potato cutter and pizza utensils with an accumulation of grease and food buildup. The cook line prep unit was seen in poor repair.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on March 29 and got an A grade.

Rancho Grande at 95 Greenwood Ave. South in Greenwood

Rancho Grande had an inspection on March 21 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed cooking equipment with an accumulation of grease buildup. Also observed was an employee using gloves for more than one task.

Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Various proteins were seen thawing at room temperature.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on April 2 and got a B grade.

House of Pizza at 2189 Highway 101 North in Laurens

House of Pizza had an inspection on March 6 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed unclean equipment and floors. Also observed was employees not washing hands when changing tasks.

Certain foods were not kept at proper holding temperatures. Cutting boards were seen with deep grooves and debris in them that could not be removed by normal cleaning.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on March 15 and got a C grade.

Trotters Restaurant at 24239 Highway 76 E in Laurens

Trotters Restaurant had an inspection on March 20 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed equipment with food and grime buildup. Also observed were foods on a buffet, including fish, gizzards, livers and chicken breasts, not kept at proper holding temperatures.

An accumulation of black buildup was seen in the ice machine. Fish was seen thawing at room temperature without running water. The dish machine had an accumulation of grey buildup in and out where machine liquids are pumped into the system, while the dish machine racks had black buildup.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on March 27 and got an A grade.

China #1 at 229 South Main Street in McCormick

China #1 had an inspection on March 7 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed raw meats being stored above fully cooked breaded chicken. Also observed was multiple dishes throughout the facility with a heavy accumulation of grime.

Multiple containers of flour, sugar and rice were seen in the back storage rooms without seals on them. A bucket of chicken was seen on the floor of the walk-in cooler. An accumulation of grime was seen on the walls and sides of equipment and shelving.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on March 20 and got an A grade.

Denny’s at 2306 Reidville Road in Spartanburg

Denny’s had an inspection on March 12 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed an employee prepping vegetables with gloves on, pull phone out of pocket, place the phone back in the pocket and then continue to prep vegetables with the same gloves on.

Black organic matter buildup was seen in the ice machine. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Sliced deli meats were seen in a container of water in the prep sink. Food debris buildup was seen inside coolers throughout the kitchen.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on March 21 and got an A grade.
