Measles in Louisiana: Doctor wants parents to get their kids vaccinated

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — There are new concerns about measles after the Louisiana Department of Health confirmed two cases in the New Orleans area.

Health officials said the patients had recently traveled out of state and an investigation is underway.

Michael Bolton is a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge. He urges parents to get their children vaccinated. He believes there could be more measles cases in Louisiana as families travel for spring break and summer.

“There’s no real treatment, it’s a virus, but we do know that if you are exposed and you get measles, the best thing to do is to get a dose of MMR vaccine if you’re not already vaccinated. There’s some studies that the use of vitamin A can be helpful,” Bolton said.

He encourages parents to get their kids vaccinated to prevent the spread of measles.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, measles typically begins with a high fever, cough, runny nose and red, watery eyes. Symptoms of measles generally appear about seven to 14 days after a person is infected.
