MDOT to begin bridge projects in Mackinac County April 17

MACKINAC COUNTY— Starting Wednesday, April 17, three Mackinac County bridges will be closed for construction and repair.

A $2 million investment from the Michigan Department of Transportation will allow three highway bridges near St. Ignace to be renovated. The repairs will cover the I-75 bridge over the Carp River, the M-123 overpass at I-75 and the M-134 bridge over the Pine River.

The bridges will undergo new epoxy overlay with a five-year performance warranty and fix various beams, railings, substructure and replace joints. The project will also cover patching, surface sealing and structure patching as needed.

In addition to regular repairs and maintenance, MDOT officials said this work is expected to extend the service life of all three bridges and connected roadways.

Construction will take place one after the other, beginning on April 17 with the M-134 bridge. All three bridges are expected to be completed by Nov. 8.

The M-134 bridge will not close down completely but will have one lane open for alternating traffic at all times, separating traffic from construction by a temporary barrier wall. There will be a speed reduction of 35 mph in place through the work area.
