McPherson Co. law enforcement purchases armored vehicle

MCPHERSON, Kan. (KSNW) — The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office and McPherson Police Department have jointly purchased an armored vehicle.

The vehicle, a BearCat, will be used by the Special Response Team (SWAT) which is comprised of members of both departments. The McPherson Police Department says it will be used during standoffs and other public safety incidents the SRT responds to.

Because of its off-road capabilities and high ground clearance, it can also respond to disasters like flooding and tornado damage.

“The BearCat represents a significant upgrade for our SRT’s capabilities,” says Sheriff Jerry Montagne. “This armored vehicle will protect our officers during critical incidents and allow them to more effectively respond to threats.”

“The safety of our officers and the public is our top priority,” says McPherson Police Chief Mikel Golden. “The BearCat will be a valuable asset in de-escalating potentially violent situations and minimizing risk to everyone involved.”

The purchase price of the vehicle was not disclosed. However, Lenco, the manufacturer, says the base price starts at $200,704.

The company also offers used models from $125,000 up to $180,000.
