McLaughlin Body announces plans to locate South Carolina, bring 250 jobs

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- McLaughlin Body Co., a supplier to heavy-equipment manufacturers, plans to open a facility in South Carolina and hire 250 people over five years.

McLaughlin Body announced plans Monday to invest $22 million in a plant outside Anderson. It would be the company's first plant outside of Illinois. Its customers would include Caterpillar Inc.'s new plant in northeast Georgia.

McLaughlin's plans hinge on final approval next week from Anderson County Council.

The company based in Moline, Ill., expects to open in a county industrial park early next year. Hiring should begin this fall and ramp up over several years.

The state's economic development council approved giving McLaughlin $4 million to buy the building, as well as job development credits.

The company makes operator protection systems, including cab enclosures and components for heavy-duty vehicles.
