McLaren Port Huron's trauma center reverified

McLaren Port Huron's trauma center has been reverified following an evaluation by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

In order to classify as a level III trauma center, the hospital must undergo a reverification process every three years to make sure it is properly equipped and its staff all have the necessary credentials.

According to the American College of Surgeons' website, trauma center levels are designated based on the resources available to treat major injuries. To qualify as a level III trauma center, McLaren Port Huron must "provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care, and stabilization of injury."

The hospital must provide emergency care 24/7, and must have a process in place to transfer patients to a level I or II trauma center if necessary. McLaren Port Huron has a transfer agreement with McLaren Macomb in Mount Clemens, which is a level II trauma center.

“With every reverification process, we renew our promise to the community to maintain this vital service for those who find themselves suddenly in need of this crucial type of care,” Dr. John Brooks, McLaren Port Huron's Chief Medical Officer, said in a news release announcing the reverification. “The process is precise and exacting, and it is an accomplishment to be recognized and shared among the clinical professionals whose exceptional abilities provide for the wellbeing of St. Clair County.”
