McEwen advances to semifinal with win over Koe at Canada Cup curling

MOOSE JAW, Sask. - Mike McEwen defeated Kevin Koe of Calgary 9-7 in a tiebreaker game Saturday to advance to the men's semifinal at the Capital One Canada Cup curling competition.

The Winnipeg native scored one in the final end for the victory at Mosaic Place. McEwen will play world champion Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., later in the day with the winner to meet Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg in Sunday's final.

Team Jennifer Jones will play Heather Nedohin of Sherwood Park, Alta., in the women's semifinal.

Kaitlyn Lawes is handling skip duties for Jones's Winnipeg rink since Jones gave birth to a baby girl two weeks ago and is also recovering from knee surgery.

The semifinal winner will play Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon in Sunday's final.

The men's and women's champions will receive one of the six automatic qualification spots for the 2013 Roar of the Rings — the tournament that will determine Canada's entries at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
