McCarthy spars with CNN over opening impeachment inquiry without vote

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) pushed back on a line of questioning Wednesday by CNN reporter Manu Raju about the pending House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry of President Biden.

After Raju pointed out to McCarthy that less than two weeks ago he acknowledged he did not have the votes in his caucus on impeachment, the Speaker shot back at the reporter.

“You know what’s interesting to me, you’re a reporter for CNN, right? I just laid out to you a lot of allegations based upon the American public,” McCarthy said during the exchange.

“I’m asking you about your words, why did you change your words,” Raju responded.

“Nancy Pelosi changed the precedent in this House,” McCarthy said. “What we’ve learned in the last couple days, wouldn’t you want to know the answer, too?”

House Republicans have centered their impeachment push on allegations that Biden and members of his family, notably his son Hunter Biden, have benefited financially in foreign business dealings from his status as a state leader.

“Your whole job is reporting,” McCarthy said, turning to and pointing at Raju. “But that’s my answer to you: Why don’t you ask the other questions?”

Raju again asked McCarthy why he has changed his position on an impeachment of Biden, to which he responded “I never changed my position.”

“So you don’t care about any of the answers,” McCarthy said. “You are very interested in the whole process.”
