McCain ribs Trump over complaints of unfair treatment: ‘I’ve been worse treated’
After President Trump complained yet again of being treated unfairly, particularly by the press, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., jabbed him in an interview Thursday.
“Well, first of all, I’ve been worse treated than President Trump has, let’s make sure that we know about that,” McCain said lightly during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
The senator was referring to his five-year-plus ordeal as a prisoner of war. Memorably, Trump questioned McCain’s heroism during the campaign when he declared, “I like people who weren’t captured.”
While delivering Wednesday’s commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Trump took the opportunity to remind the graduates of his plight as the leader of the free world.
“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately, especially by the media,” Trump said. “No politician in history — and I say this with great surety — has been treated worse or more unfairly.”
McCain’s rejoinder was reminiscent of the flood of responses to Trump on social media, many of which were quick to point to politicians who were assassinated as examples of those had “been treated worse or more unfairly.”
Trump’s complaints of unfair treatment, particularly lamenting press coverage of him, were a prevailing theme of his presidential campaign, and those gripes have not slowed in his first months in office, which have been mired in chaos.
After Robert Mueller was announced as the special counsel appointed to investigate Russia’s interference in the presidential election, including whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin, Trump tweeted Thursday, “This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!”
McCain spoke glowingly of Mueller, who previously served as the FBI director under former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
“I think that’s a nonstarter,” McCain said of the possibility of Trump sparring with Mueller in the future. “Robert Mueller has a reputation going back to service in the Vietnam conflict. I know of no one who doesn’t have the highest regard for Robert Mueller.”
