McAfee Knob Trailhead Shuttle expands service into Salem

SALEM, Va. (WFXR)—Roanoke County and the City of Salem held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to announce the expansion of the McAfee Knob Trailhead Shuttle service into Salem on Thursday, Feb. 29.

New shuttle stops in Salem are Longwood Park and 101 South Broad Street. From these locations, the shuttle service will drop passengers to the designated shuttle pull-off near the McAfee Knob Trailhead parking lot.

With limited parking and the popularity of the trail, Roanoke County applied for and was eventually awarded funding through a grant request from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) in Sept. 2022. The funding was used to develop and eventually launch the shuttle, which has since helped the parking dilemma.

In 2023, Roanoke County again received funding from the DRPT to add additional stops in Salem to provide even more parking and transportation options for guests.

The shuttle will resume service on Friday, March 1. The shuttle will run on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holiday Mondays until Dec. 1.

Reservations may be made by visiting the McAfee Knob Shuttle’s website and clicking ‘book now’. Tickets are $5 one way, plus booking fees.
