Mayor Wilson says she aims to keep Abravanel Hall in its ‘present form’

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Salt Lake officials appear to be pushing to preserve the iconic Abravanel Hall as Salt Lake City continues to move forward with plans for a new sports, entertainment, culture and convention district downtown.

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson released a statement through social media on Tuesday afternoon saying she appreciated the extensive amount of input regarding the future of the popular concert venue.

“Salt Lake County is the owner and operator of Abravanel Hall,” said Wilson. “As Mayor of Salt Lake County, I am working diligently on a reimagined downtown and a district design that allows Abravanel Hall to remain in its present form and value the feedback from the community.”

The exact future of the Abravanel Hall and the proposed entertainment district remains to be seen.

Great Salt Lake’s south arm hits ‘significant’ elevation

The Smith Entertainment Group recently submitted an application requesting a lease for the two blocks east of the Delta Center. The idea would be to rebuild the area to include retail, restaurants, residential units and more to accommodate a newly renovated Delta Center. Mayor Wilson previously said all parties are aligned in confirming that fine arts and culture will have a strong and vital presence in the downtown core.

Still, Salt Lakers rose in resounding support to preserve Abravanel Hall as is. An online petition to save the concert hall that started at the beginning of May has gathered over 33,000 signatures, nearly reaching its 35,000 goal within two weeks.

Mayor Wilson and other Salt Lake officials have said conversations about the district and the future of downtown Salt Lake City are still in the very early stages but there is a “clear commitment” to providing a world-class concert hall for the city and the Utah Symphony.
