Emanuel amps up call for Chicago casino, says all revenue would go to city's public schools
CHICAGO (AP) -- Mayor Rahm Emanuel is amping up support for a Chicago casino by vowing that all revenue would go to city schools.
Emanuel released a video Wednesday showing footage of students and teachers and ending with a promise that 100 percent of revenue would go to education.
Emanuel has had a tumultuous relationship with schools. Last year, Chicago Public Schools teachers went on strike for seven days. His plan to close 54 schools has been fought hard by parents and community leaders.
Legislation adding five more casinos in Illinois, including in Chicago, is pending in Springfield. Gov. Pat Quinn has vetoed two similar proposals but signaled earlier this year that he'd support a plan with stronger ethics.
Lawmakers responded with legislation that includes a ban on campaign contributions from the industry.
