NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) —  Mayor Eric Adams joined PIX11 Morning News Friday to discuss City Council approving the next phase of the Willets Point revitalization project.

The city will soon have a new professional soccer stadium in Queens after the City Council signed off on Phase 2 of the project by a vote of 47 to 1 on Thursday.

Major closures, detours on the BQE for repairs

Mayor Adams joined by Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer talked about the major redevelopment plan which includes a new hotel and retail space. The plan also includes 1,400 subsidized or below-market-rate apartments, for a total of 2,500 affordable housing units when combined with the first phase of the project.

“We’re bringing 2,500 affordable housing units, 150,000 square feet of public open space, thousands of good-paying jobs, and the city’s first soccer-specific stadium to a neighborhood in Queens that used to be known for its junkyards,” Adams said on Thursday.

Adams also spoke about a new bill granting emergency personnel body armor, mayoral control of schools, and a new communication policy issued by the mayor.
