ROME (AP) — The mayor of the Sicilian island of Lampedusa says at least 25 bodies have been recovered after a migrant boat ran aground off the island.
It's the second deadly grounding this week. On Monday, 13 men drowned while trying to reach southern Sicily, just a few meters (yards) from shore.
Lampedusa Mayor Giusi Nicolini told Sky Tg24 that so far 25 bodies had been found and that search and rescue operations were continuing. She says the dead included a child of about age 3 and a pregnant woman. She says over 100 survived.
Lampedusa is closer to Africa than the Italian mainland and is the frequent destination for smugglers' boats.
