Mayo High School for Math, Science, and Technology ranked No.8 public school in South Carolina

DARLINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) – Mayo High School for Math, Science, and Technology was ranked as the No. 8 public high school in South Carolina by the US News and World Report.

The district made the announcement Thursday in a news release.

Mayo High School, a countywide magnet school, has previously been named a National Blue Ribbon School and a Palmetto’s Finest School, the release said.

“Mayo High School for Math, Science & Technology is truly a gem in the Pee Dee,” said Mayo Principal Stephania Lenard. “Darlington County students as well as the families and teachers who support them are focused on excellence. It’s their hard work that makes Mayo an amazing place to learn and grow. Each day we are reminded by our school motto, ‘Hard work pays off.’”

The US News and World Report high school rankings take data from several aspects of education to make its ratings. The US News and World Report factors in graduation rate, advanced placement exams, along with proficiencies in science and reading, according to the release.

The school has a 100% graduation and is tied for the top spot statewide. The report details that a quarter of Mayo students take at least one AP exam, and the school boasts a 93% proficiency in reading and an 86% proficiency in science, which is higher than state averages, the release said.

The report also highlights Mayo students’ 99.1 percentile score on its end-of-course examination program, which is a measurement of “mastery of math, reading and oftentimes science state assessments based on the proportions of students who achieved each proficiency level,” the release said.
