Mayo Clinic hosts ‘Prom Trauma’ incidents at Chippewa Valley high schools

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Prom season is almost here, and that means that the dangers of drinking and driving are on the top of many parent’s minds. Mayo Clinic Health System held “Prom Trauma” simulations at multiple schools across the Chippewa Valley today.

After the demonstration of what can go wrong, speakers spoke with students about what can happen after a drunk driving crash. Joni Gilles, registered nurse in the Mayo Clinic trauma department, explains, “What we like to do is we partner with the kids to give them what could be a real-life experience and that real-life experience could be based off of actions and choices that they make. You know, the goal is not to scare the kids, is not a scare tactic. It’s to talk about what reality could be based off of those actions and choices.”

Mayo Clinic says since partnering with area organizations to bring these demonstrations to schools, no students in the area have died at prom from an alcohol-related crash.
