May The 4th Be With You

Mar. 27—Women in Need Inc. is hoping to get a jumpstart on entries for the 14th annual Glow Run 5K scheduled for early May at Harry Myers Park East Pavilion.

With the race slated for May 4, WIN is offering an early-bird special for those registering by April 4 with the regular $35 registration fee knocked down to just $28. Registration for the kids run is just $10 but through April 4 is $8.

Funds raised from the Glow Run 5K support Women In Need — Texas in offering programming and services in the community.

Billed as a chance to activate your lightsabers and join the mission at at 6 p.m., the event promosises a "night of epic fitness and fun under the stars."

According to the organization, joining the event means joining a spirited team of supporters and making a real impact in the lives of those affected by domestic violence in Rockwall, Hunt and Rains counties.

"Your involvement fuels essential programs, support and resources that uplift survivors in our community," said a WIN statement. "Whether you're a seasoned runner or just eager to give back, the Glow Run is your chance to show unity, get active and spread hope.

Women In Need Inc. began in 1980 with a group of Greenville residents consisting of a DHS social worker, police personnel and several business owners and clergy concerned about the lack of resources for family violence in the Hunt County area. After meeting and determining that the need was great, these nine citizens began a campaign to raise funds for the Family Violence Shelter.

Two local business women, Doris Jones and Midlre (Mo) Bates contributed the first $5,000 and an additional $4,000 was raised. Women In Need Inc. saw much growth and expansion in its nearly 40 years. It now has roughly 30 employees, four resale shops, "My Sister's Closet" and offices in two counties offers client and legal advocacy, shelter, resource referrals and a prevention program
