MAWSS reports 3 wastewater overflows after severe weather
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Mobile Area Water & Sewer System responded to three wastewater overflows in the Mobile area on Monday due to heavy rainfall, according to a release.
Wastewater overflows occur when heavy rains infiltrate aging sewer lines. MAWSS is addressing wastewater overflows with capital projects.
WEATHER AWARE: Best chance of nighttime severe storms south of I-10
Here are where the three overflows occurred, how much overflowed and where:
Location | Estimated Gallons | Receiving Water |
755 Johnston Ave. | 4,000 | Eslava Creek |
766 Johnston Ave. | 1,900 | Eslava Creek |
McVay Drive at Navco Road | 46,500 | Eslava Creek |
The MAWSS release said all overflows have stopped.
“MAWSS sewer system is designed to collect and convey wastewater to a MAWSS wastewater treatment plant,” the release said. “During heavy rains, storm water infiltrates and inundates aging sewer lines causing manholes to overflow. Health department precautions regarding contact with impacted waters and seafood preparation should be followed.”
