Matthews Police K-9 Rhett given bullet, stab proof vest

MATTHEWS, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A protective vest has been donated to a Matthews Police Department K9, Matthews Police say.

On March 6, officials announced that K-9 Rhett had received a donation of a bullet and stab-proof vest from the non-profit Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

The vest is embroidered with “In memory of K9 Hobbs, Des Moines, IA – EOW 12/12/23” in honor of Des Moines Police Department K9 Hobbs, who died on Dec. 12, 2023, from a sudden illness.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a charity that provides protective vests and other tools to help law enforcement K9s and has given over 5,514 vests to K9s in all 50 states with a value of $6.9 million. Approximately 30,000 law enforcement K9s work in the U.S.

According to their website, Vested Interest vests offer more coverage and are custom-fitted with National Institute of Justice-certified ballistic panels. Each vest is valued at $1,800, weighs about 4-5 pounds and comes with a five-year warranty.

To qualify, K9 must be certified with its handler, be at least 20 months old, not have a current vest or be scheduled for retirement in the next 12 months.

A $985 donation to Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. can sponsor one vest.
