Matt Smith is OK about being replaced on The Crown

We know it's for the best – and we know their replacements will be wonderful – yet we can't help but feel sad about The Crown bidding farewell to the Elizabeth and Philip we've come to know.

Matt Smith, however, is completely fine with being replaced. Just as well, really.

Ahead of The Crown's season two premiere, Matt Smith has revealed that he's ready to say goodbye to his role of Prince Philip – even if it is getting more exciting.

Speaking to TV Guide, Matt admitted that he thought the series' decision to switch actors as the characters age will be "really fascinating to see", providing they pull it off.

"I think it's really interesting to see how people are going to reinterpret it, and I think it keeps it fresh," he said, before hinting that he might have got bored if he'd have stayed in the role.

"And I think it's difficult to sustain an actor's interest over six [seasons]," he added.

It was always intended for hit Netflix series to run for six seasons, as it explores Queen Elizabeth II's entire life and the Windsor dynasty.

Next in line for The Crown's throne is unofficial royalty Olivia Colman, who will be taking on the role of middle-aged Elizabeth for season three.

Although overjoyed with her latest role, Olivia has admitted she's pretty terrified. "I'm just full of fear because you don't want to be the one who screws it up," she admitted.

Your country has every faith in you, your Maj.

The Crown's second season will launch on Friday, December 8 on Netflix.
