Matt Campbell: Iowa State fans worried he may leave 'don't have anything to worry about'
Iowa State coach Matt Campbell wants to prevent Iowa State fans from panicking during the team’s best football season in years.
After beating Texas Tech on Saturday the Cyclones jumped into the AP poll at No. 25 on Sunday. That sets up a matchup between ranked teams in Week 9 when TCU rolls into Ames. And if Iowa State wins, the Cyclones will be tied for first place in the conference.
Campbell is in his second year as the Cyclones’ head coach and if other schools with more financial resources than ISU are looking for coaches at the end of the season, Campbell figures to be a candidate, right?
Well, maybe not. He told the Des Moines Register on Monday that “[Iowa State fans] don’t have anything to worry about” regarding a potential departure.
To be fair to Campbell and Iowa State fans, the simple presence of success isn’t what immediately made him a possibility to move to a school with a stronger football tradition. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit tweeted that ISU fans should enjoy Campbell while they can because he’s “gone.”
Campbell told the Register that was “frustrating” because it discredits the university and football program.
The coach came to Iowa State after four years as Toledo’s head coach. In those four seasons he compiled a 35-15 overall record with the Rockets and went 24-8 in the MAC. At 37, Campbell’s success and age will be attractive to a lot of schools. If Iowa State finishes the 2017 season like it’s started it, Campbell will be a hot name even if he doesn’t want to be mentioned.
