MasterChef fans were overjoyed as narrator India Fisher made a rare appearance in front of the camera.

She may have one of the most recognisable voices on British television, but the star has resisted the urge to set foot in the kitchen – until now.

With the cooking show celebrating its 20th anniversary, the BBC marked the milestone with a special episode as various past winners and judges returned, with John Torode donning the whites to cook up a meal.

Fisher made the boldest entrance, however, as she got in front of the camera, saying: “I vowed I wouldn't do this, but I'll read the menu out loud. Pan-fried scallop, grilled red mullet, smoked cauliflower puree, straw potatoes with vinegar powder, fennel and gherkin pickle, scallop coral cracker. Sounds delicious.”

The surprise appearance was welcomed by fans of the show on social media, with one writing on X/Twitter: “Watching #Masterchef and the biggest shock of the night is India Fisher not looking like I expected.”

“Glad the #MasterChef voiceover got invited to the semi-final 20th anniversary meal. Odd to see her face. Had to rewind when I heard her reading the menu and was like, hold on a minute I know that voice,” added another fan.

With the show celebrating its 20th anniversary, there were rumours that the BBC could look to give the show a break, but Torode and Gregg Wallace confirmed that they had no plans to take a break during an appearance on This Morning.

“No, it's definitely not the last one!” said Wallace, with Torode adding: “Alison [Hammond] stop it. Stop it. The great thing is that it is on BBC One, it is always on BBC One.” The show was extended by six years back in 2022, so it seems certain we’ll get at least another four years!

MasterChef airs on BBC One.
