Massive tornado rips through Hawley, Texas on Thursday. See photos, video of the damage

Several tornadoes touched down Thursday in Jones County near Abilene, part of an area known as “the big country.”

"We've had multiple confirmed tornadoes this evening," the National Weather Service office in San Angelo said on X Thursday evening. "Please stay weather aware and make sure you have a way to receive warnings!"

There’s no estimate yet of the damage or if there were any injuries or fatalities.

Hawley, Texas sits about 13 miles north of downtown Abilene in Jones County.

Hawley ISD has flex day for students

Hawley ISD had a flex day for students Friday but attendance wasn’t mandatory.

Hawley ISD said in a statement on Facebook that the "Hawley community has been hit pretty hard and we have several families that have lost homes." The district said that while the school seems to have been spared major damage, there is "pretty substantial" flooding on the grounds.
