Mass State Police say Sunday's fatal crash victim was a 46-year-old New Bedford man.

NEW BEDFORD — A 46-year-old New Bedford man has been identified as the victim of a deadly single-car crash in the city Sunday afternoon.

According to Mass. State Police, the driver, Jeffrey Szynal, 46, of New Bedford, "experienced a medical event and lost consciousness" while taking Exit 27, the off-ramp from Route I-195 East onto Washburn Street, crashing into a utility pole at the end of the ramp. MSP started receiving reports of the crash around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, according to a release. Szynal was transported to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An unidentified passenger in the vehicle was not injured, MSP said. The ramp to Washburn Street remained closed for roughly an hour, the release said, for "recovery and cleanup."

As of Monday evening, crash remained under investigation by members of the Mass. State Police-Dartmouth Barracks with assistance from the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and Bristol County State Police Detective Unit.
