Mary-Kate And Ashley Olsen Are Not Aging Well

The Olsen twins rarely step out in public, but when they do, they are usually slammed by netizens for looking old and gaunt. This was the case Monday at the 2017 Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, which is informally known as the Met Ball or the Met Gala. While most viewers drooled over what LaLa Anthony wore and how Kim Kardashian looked, some poked fun at the child stars.

Minutes after Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen stepped out on the white carpet, their last name became a top-trending Twitter topic on the first Monday of May with more than 12,500 mentions. The number continued to grow, garnering hundreds of “Olsen” mentions within seconds.

“I wish the Olsen twins had shown up in Priyanka Chopra's dress instead and announced a Mary-Kate and Ashley Mysteries reboot,” TV host Brice Sander tweeted, referencing the mystery movies the sisters made when they were children.

That was one of the nicer comments.

“Can somebody please figure out exactly which drug made the olsen twins look like this so that i can stop doing that drug?” Twitter user @jackdwagner wrote. @NotTylerOakley added: “ The Olsen twins low key look like they belong in a live action remake of The Dark Crystal.”

For one photo that went viral, they stood next to 34-year-old rapper Nicki Minaj, which didn’t help their case. Minaj looked more youthful even though she is 4 years older than the 30-year-old actors.

Their harsh makeup and sunken-in faces might have shocked some people, but the Olsens arguably hit the target when it came to the theme.

While most people are Twitter wrote disparaging things about the sisters, Vogue said in a Monday post, “Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have arrived channeling the deshabillé spirit of Comme des Garçons. Mary-Kate has chosen a nude embroidered dress with heaps of vintage jewelry, while Ashley’s gone for a white gown accessorized with a lilac and lime fur-trimmed jacket.” They advised: “Adjust your spring shopping lists accordingly.”

Each year, the Met Gala has a theme. For the 2017 edition of the gala, designers chose to highlight the work of Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo. The 74-year-old fashion designer is the second living stylish to be celebrated by the Costume Institute.

“Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past 40 years,” Andrew Bolton, Costume Institute curator in charge, said in an October 2016 press release. “By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.”
