Role-playing video game Marvel Heroes is shutting down earlier than expected.

It was announced two weeks ago that Marvel Heroes would close on December 31.

However, Gazillion Entertainment has now said that the game servers are shutting down immediately – a month before originally planned.

A statement on Twitter read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the closing of Gazillion Entertainment.

"As a result, we are no longer able to operate Marvel Heroes Omega until December 31 as originally planned.

"Instead, Marvel Heroes Omega will be sunset immediately on all platforms and will no longer be available as soon as this process is completed."

The statement continues: "The company would like to sincerely thank its fans and employees for all the support over years of development and live service."

Marvel Heroes was launched in 2013, and is a free-to-play MMORPG game inspired by Blizzard's Diablo.

It features heroes and villains associated with various Marvel comics and films, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Defenders, the Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men.

Marvel Heroes apparently shut down after Marvel decided to end its relationship with Gazillion.
