Marvel’s Black Female Iron-Man Has A New Superhero Name

For anyone keen on guessing, it isn't Ironwoman.

In early July, the popular Iron Man series garnered a significant deal of press in the comic book world for introducing Riri Williams, a 15-year-old African-American female at MIT, as the next incarnation of Iron Man. However, it turns out the prodigious teen is getting a new alias and it won’t be named Iron-Woman. According to Wired, Riri Williams will assume Tony Stark’s superhero mantle under the name Ironheart.

In an interview with Wired, comic book scribe Brian Michael Bendis revealed that the name was coined by Joe Quesada, Marvel’s resident editor-in-chief. “Iron Woman seemed old fashioned to some,” Bendis said. “Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare. And Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole.”
