Marvel's Scarlet Witch Is Getting Her Own Live-Action TV Show

The Scarlet Witch is BACK.

It's been a big week for female superheroes: Brie Larson-starrer Captain Marvel released its first official trailer this week — and now another Marvel character is reportedly getting her own spinoff TV series.

[Variety] reported that the execs at Disney and Marvel Studios are collaborating for the early development of new shows featuring some of our favorite supporting superheroes, including the Scarlet Witch, played in the Avengers and Captain America films by Elizabeth Olsen.

The report also says a TV spinoff is potentially in the works for our favorite god of mischief, Loki (played in the films by Tom Hiddleston. The news shows are all part of Disney's new effort to create their own streaming service, responding to the shift in how movies and TV are consumed, and the rise in popularity for services like Netflix.

As for what the shows might look like: they'll reportedly be 6-8 episode limited series, with what Variety calls "hefty" budgets. So think prestige TV versions of Marvel's superheroes, with both Tom and Elizabeth "expected" to reprise their roles. And more superhero series could be on the way.

Interestingly, Olsen has previously said she's not interested in a Scarlet Witch standalone movie. But a spinoff series? That's yet to be disclosed.

When asked about a Scarlet Witch movie, IndieWire reported that Elizabeth said, “We are at ground zero. It’s definitely not something I’m pushing, and I don’t know if it’s something that [Marvel is] going to push either. Paul Bettany and I joked about having a domestic television show on Netflix or something, and it would just be like a house event where Scarlet Witch goes bananas. That’s what we joke about, but I don’t think any of those things are happening. But I’m happy that I’m still around and they still use me well — and that’s fine.”

It seems as though the latter part of her statement could be foreshadowing of sorts. But no matter who plays Scarlet Witch on TV, we're excited to see even more opportunities for women to play action heroes onscreen.
