Martin says he will 'serve with fairness and impartiality'

May 8—For the past 17 years, Scotty Martin has served as chief constable in Whitfield County Magistrate Court. He says that experience, watching and learning from eight judges during those years, has prepared him to be a magistrate judge. He faces Wallace "Wally" Johnson III in the May 21 nonpartisan election to fill a magistrate judge position currently held by Gayle Gazaway, who is retiring at the end of the year.

Dalton Daily Citizen: Why are you seeking office?

Martin: I have a strong sense of justice and a desire to serve our community to assure that the legal proceedings are fair, impartial and conducted according to the law with expediency.

DDC: What makes you the most qualified candidate?

Martin: I have been employed with the Magistrate Court of Whitfield County for 17 years. I have established a work relationship with the judges, clerks and constables of that office. I have also assisted the citizens of Whitfield County throughout the years in various aspects. My current chief constable position has trained me to become a future successful magistrate judge.

DDC: What will be your top three priorities if elected?

Martin:

— Have a positive impact.

— Uphold the principles of justice.

— Serve with fairness and impartiality.

DDC: What are your views regarding government transparency?

Martin: Government should have total transparency. Transparency fosters trust between the government and the governed. It helps prevent corruption and abuse of power.

DDC: In just a few words, what else would you like to tell the community about your background, experience, education, qualifications or why a voter should vote for you?

Martin:

— Born and raised in Whitfield County.

— 17 years of experience in Magistrate Court.

— High school diploma and associate's degree in law enforcement from Dalton State College.

— For 17 years, I have been watching, listening and learning from eight different judges that have served our county. I have the experience, knowledge and desire to keep our court moving forward.
