Martian Teen Love in the First 'The Space Between Us' Trailer

If The Martian was reimagined as a tear-jerking teen romance like The Fault In Our Stars, you’d probably wind up with something like The Space Between Us. The soapy, outer-space summer adventure just launched its first, spoiler-heavy trailer, which you can watch above.

In an extended sneak peek, Gary Oldman’s scientist excitedly celebrates mankind’s ability to finally colonize Mars. His astronauts’ maiden mission, however, gets complicated when one voyager turns out to be pregnant and subsequently gives birth on the Red Planet. Sixteen years later, that boy Gardener (Ender’s Game’s Asa Butterfield) has never stepped foot on Earth, and when he finally does get the chance to breathe our air, he goes in search of the pretty girl (Tomorrowland’s Britt Robertson) whom he befriended over intergalactic video chat. The only problem: Their budding amour may be of the heartbreaking sort, given how poorly his heart is acclimating to our planet.

Given that BD Wong’s character blurts out “Bring him home!” — a phrase that served as the tagline for last year’s The Martian — director Peter Chelsom’s already feels quite familiar, albeit with the sort of soaring quasi-tragic romanticism aimed squarely at enticing younger moviegoers. Whether it’s capable of developing its own unique identity, however, won’t be determined until the film lands in theaters on Aug. 19.
