Marriott hotel in San Mateo to close after being open since late 1960s

(KRON) — A hotel on the Peninsula is closing after more than half a century. The Marriott Hotel in San Mateo is closing, city officials confirm with KRON4.

The closing date for the Marriott and the reason for the closure are unknown at this time. The hotel, named the “San Mateo Marriott San Francisco Airport,” is located at 1770 South Amphlett Blvd. — about 10 miles away from SFO.

The hotel has been open since the late 1960s as Royal Coach Inn, according to San Mateo officials. It was then acquired by Tarsadia Hotels in 1997 when it became the Regency Plaza Hotel before turning into the San Mateo Marriott.

The Marriott in San Mateo was then purchased by database management company Oracle in 2016. San Mateo officials have not been informed of what will replace the Marriott in that space, a city spokesperson told KRON4.

Following the San Mateo Marriott closure, the nearest location to SFO would be the San Francisco Airport Marriott Waterfront in Burlingame. That does not include Marriott-owned hotels such as Fairfield Inn, Residence Inn, etc.

KRON4 reached out to Marriott via email and left a voicemail to comment on the closure. We did not hear a response in time for this report. We also contacted Oracle Corporation who also did not get back to us in time for the report.
