Harrison Ford, whom she had an off and on screen love affair with in Star Wars, said in a statement to Inside Edition: "Carrie was one-of-a-kind…brilliant, original.  Funny and emotionally fearless. She lived her life, bravely...My thoughts are with her daughter Billie, her mother Debbie, her brother Todd, and her many friends. We will all miss her."

Fisher, the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and entertainer Eddie Fisher, reportedly suffered a heart attack 15 minutes before her flight landed at LAX. She was returning to L.A. after a book tour overseas.

The actress, best known for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, had a long history of drug and alcohol abuse. She documented those years in her autobiographies, 2009’s Wishful Drinking and November's The Princess Diarist.

In her most recent book, she recounted when she, at 19, had an affair with Ford, who was 33 and married with two children at the time.

"I looked over at Harrison. A hero's face — a few strands of hair fell over his noble, slightly furrowed brow," she wrote. "How could you ask such a shining specimen of a man to be satisfied with the likes of me? I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him. He was kind."

She also wrote the semi-autobiographical book, Postcards from the Edge, in 1987, which is about a woman trying to put her life together following an overdose.

Friends, fans and former colleagues of the actress paid tribute to her on social media.

Other Star Wars co-stars, Mark Hamill and Billy Dee Williams, were among those mourning her passing Tuesday.

As did Peter Mayhew, who portrayed Chewbacca, shared his thoughts and rare photos of Fisher.

The Hannah and Her Sisters star was married once, to folk singer Paul Simon in 1993. The marriage lasted only one year.
