Marion County leaders attending funeral for slain New Mexico State Police officer

MARION COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Representatives of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office are in Albuquerque to attend Wednesday funeral services for slain New Mexico State Police officer Justin Hare.

Sheriff Brian Wallace said members of Hare’s family will be presented with a donation from the South Carolina chapter of Brotherhood for the Fallen along with a certified flag that was flown on the Statehouse grounds.

Hare, 35, died March 15 after being shot multiple times along Interstate 40. Jaremy Smith of Marion is charged with his murder, and also is a person of interest in the death and disappearance of Pee Dee paramedic Phonesia Machado-Fore.

New Mexico State Police officers were on hand for Machado-Fore’s March 23 funeral.

Smith has yet to be charged in connection with Machado-Fore and remains jailed in New Mexico. Federal prosecutors said earlier this month they might seek the death penalty for Hare’s killing.

Hare’s services are set for 1 p.m. at Legacy Church in Albuquerque.
