Since news of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s split broke last week, there’s been plenty of speculation about what caused the breakup. One rumor involved an affair between Pitt and his Allied costar, Marion Cotillard. On Wednesday, Cotillard took to Instagram to personally deny the affair.

“This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into,” she wrote. “I am not used to commenting on things like this nor taking them seriously but as this situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to speak up.”

Now, her longtime romantic partner, Guillaume Canet, is also speaking out in her defense.

“I also don’t usually talk about my private life, which until now I’ve always protected attentively,” Canet wrote in an Instagram caption, translated from French to English by Time. “But the fury of the tabloids, the venal stupidity of some people calling themselves journalists, the haters who feel braver behind a keyboard, drive me to speak of the pride, love, respect and admiration I have for Marion staying as strong and intelligent in the face all these stupid and unfounded accusations.”

He went on to encourage media and fans alike to “move on.”

“I think we’re all living with much more important things at this moment and now it’s time to move on and raise the bar a bit. Even if there’s so much work for some, I want to be positive.”

According to Vanity Fair, Pitt and Jolie have both issued statements asking for privacy during this difficult time.
