Mariners' Hernandez exits due to illness

Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez came out of his Monday start against the Kansas City Royals after just one inning due to virus-like symptoms, the Mariners announced.

It was Hernandez's 33rd birthday Monday.

Hernandez had appeared to injure himself trying to field a line drive back up the middle by Ryan O'Hearn in the first. Hernandez finished the inning, then was replaced by Chasen Bradford to start the second, but the team did not say he was injured, merely ill.

Hernandez allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout in his brief outing.

In his only previous start this year, Hernandez yielded three runs (one earned) on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings during a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels on April 1.

Hernandez, a six-time All-Star, was the 2010 American League Cy Young Award winner.
