Mariah Carey's new movie blends her love for pets with her hit song ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’

In an age when movie adaptations can be based on seemingly anything, it’s surprising that we’ve had to wait 23 years for Mariah Carey’s animated version of her hit song “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

But finally it’s here. Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You features Little Mariah (Breanna Yde of Nickelodeon’s School of Rock), who yearns for a puppy to show off at an upcoming school fashion show. The vocal cast also features Henry Winkler and Carey herself, who serves as the movie’s narrator.

The movie is at least partially inspired by Carey’s own lifelong love of animals, specifically Jack Russell terriers. She reminisced to Yahoo Entertainment, “I had a barn and we had some horses there, and Jack Russells are bred to run behind the horses and all that. And so my first Jack Russell’s name was Jack.”

Little Mariah’s puppy in the movie is also named Jack. Coincidence? Carey says yes.

“I didn’t even tell them to do that! But I guess a few people knew that I had a dog named Jack, I don’t know,” she said.

A few people? More like anyone who ever saw the music video for “Honey.”

Since then, Carey’s Jack Russell brood has expanded to include Jack Jr., Jill E. Beans, Cha Cha, and more.

The song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is unavoidable the closer you get to the holidays, but Carey said that’s not necessarily the case at home with her twins, Moroccan and Monroe. She said, “When they ask to hear it, it’s up to them to listen to it. I did not force the song upon them!”

As for Carey’s own Christmas wish, she’s keeping it simple this year: “I want peace and some happiness.”

Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You is available on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital on Nov. 14, 2017.
