Maria Fire Blazes in Santa Paula, California

Firefighters in Ventura County, California, worked to protect homes from the advances of the Maria Fire during the early hours of November 1.

The fire started on the evening of October 31, and grew to about 5,000 acres overnight, the Ventura County Fire Department said.

The fire had grown to more than 8,700 acres and was at zero percent containment as of 3 pm local time Friday, November 1, according to CALFIRE.

The fire was spread by eastern winds, authorities said. More than 400 firefighters were responding to the blaze, authorities said.

World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit that provides meals during and after disasters, filmed this video of fire trucks passing by while the Maria Fire blazes in the background. The organization said they had set up a kitchen at a nearby evacuation shelter.
